NEW WORLD
A grimdark 18th century survival management rogue-like. Will you be able to lead your party safely into the unexplored Western frontier, or will you succumb to the unknown?
The player starts out in western Pennsylvania in the year of our lord 1754, right after the start of the French and Indian War. Life during this time period is tough, the people are superstitious and poor, the land is harsh and untamed. In order to survive one must possess many skills. Word has spread of alleged creatures to the west, though many in the colonies dismiss this as the talk of savages and men driven mad by isolation.
Trapper
The lifeblood of the New World. The wealth they generate by selling furs back in Europe have allowed this virgin territory to establish itself and thrive. Trapping is not an easy profession, however, nor a particularly safe one at that. Men leave their homes in the Old World to hunt in the North American wilderness for months at a time. Constantly exposed to the elements, stalked by dangerous predators and with raids by marauding Indians a perpetual threat, one has to be either very tough, very brave, or very foolish.
Militia
With serious threats to people and property around every corner, there is great need for local militia in the New World. Minutemen as some call them are stationed in every town and city, ready to respond at a moment’s notice. Regular everyday folk sign up for these positions eager to defend their loved ones. There is often great variety between those in uniform though they share one thing in common, access to arms and the training to use them.
Barber surgeon
Times are tough in the New World. Often one must diversify their skills in order to make ends meet. The Barber Surgeon typifies this ethos; when not currying hair they turn their steady hands into instruments of medicine. Skilled with razors and typically quite well educated, a Barber Surgeon makes a valuable companion.
Lumberjack
Lumberjacks are known for two things, their unparalleled strength and endurance, and the amount of food they can put away in a day. Men live in camps away from their families for months even years at a time, working in the most remote of areas. Logging is a dangerous job, if the saws, predators or widowmaker branches don’t do you in, the backbreaking labour will.
Clerk
Your average clerk spends their days haggling with their customers, stocking their shelves and counting their coin. Though the people of the New World are resourceful, there is always need for a peddler. Whether it be arms, tack, livestock or dry goods, a good clerk goes where the money is, and word has it the money is out west.
Crook
Which came first, the crook or the mark? As long as man has made an honest living there have been those who make a living exploiting them, whether it be through violence, deception, or perhaps a bit of both. Some wish to escape their life of crime, sailing to the New World to leave the sins of their old lives behind them, others are simply looking for new targets and scant law enforcement. Though tough and resourceful, your average crook isn’t known for working well in groups.
Voyageur
If trappers are the lifeblood of the New World, Voyageurs are its veins. These ‘Travellers’ are vital instruments, transporting furs from the remote American wilderness all the way back to the port cities in the east for sale back in Europe. Rising as early as 2-3 am these men can paddle for 14 hours a day, at up to 55 strokes a minute. Though they spend much of their time alone in the wilderness, many voyageurs are simple family men, working hard to put bread on the table.
Skinner
Buffalo know not of the projectile weapons of man. A herd will surround their fallen members, clumping up around them as hunters pick them off one by one. In this fashion a party of just a handful of men can shoot thousands of the creatures per season. That’s where the Skinner comes in. When not stoking the campfires and taking inventory, Skinners are put to work recovering all the valuable materials that make the bison worth hunting, and these days, there’s more work than ever.
Sodbuster
For as long as man has lived in permanent settlements, there has been agriculture. It’s what separates man from the animals, and allows modern civilization to exist. Despite its importance, tillers of the earth are often some of the poorest members of society, gambling year after year on mother-nature's goodwill. Despite their material shortcomings, farmers are honest folk, and damn hard workers.
Camp Follower
Armies are like roving ecological disasters, flowing into an area and draining it of its resources. Oftentimes the logistics of an army are insufficient for the needs of the men, that’s where the Camp follower comes in. They comfort, launder and cook for the droves of men marching through their homeland. Afterall, why shouldn’t honest, hard-working folk profit from a little war?
Outcast
A pariah, excommunicated and expelled from her convent for the grave crime of questioning the church. Yet, her faith is stronger than ever. Opportunities for unmarried women in the New World are scarce, but those who are able to provide comfort in times like these are always in demand.
